A process that verifies that a user has the correct permissions to access a resource such as a Web page or database, or has the correct privileges to perform a task such as approving templates. Authorization is typically set up by a system administrator, or site developer, and checked and cleared by the computer. The user provides some type of identification, such as a code number or a password, which the computer verifies against its internal records.
